Chapter of United Nations Association of the USA
Wins
National Award for Electronic Communications and Innovative Use of Software
Hastings-on-Hudson,
NY, May 4, 2006 --
The Westchester Chapter of the United Nations Association of the USA has won the UNA-USA
2006 Earl W. Eames, Jr. Award for electronic communications and innovative use
of software. The Award will be presented on June 8 to Jeanne Betsock
Stillman, Secretary of the Westchester Chapter, at UNA-USA’s Annual Meeting
in Washington, DC.
To
reach a larger audience among the 925,000 people of Westchester County, New York, the Westchester
Chapter developed three electronic communications products. Stillman, a resident of
Hastings-on-Hudson, leads these efforts in collaboration with other chapter members, interns
and professional and community supporters.
“Going
Global with the UN: From Westchester to the World”
is a 26-week, 1 / 2 hour series of videos about the UN and its work, airing since
October 2005 on 14 public access cable TV stations throughout Westchester. The series
makes available to the public selected videos produced by the UN and its agencies (FAO,
World Bank, UNICEF). Themes include UN History, Human Rights, Education, Poverty
Reduction, Development, Health, the Environment, War & Peace, Gender Issues and Ageing. A
second season is in production.
“Peace
Makes the World a Better Place,” a
20-minute video, was produced by the Chapter and based on its Spring 2005 project in Yonkers
public schools. The video highlights 270 pieces of artwork drawn by third-graders
after conversations with chapter members and interns in their classrooms. Interviews
with children from 1st through 6th grade, done during “Yonkers
Mayfair” and at the Yonkers YMCA, bring out the themes of peace in the home, neighborhood,
school, playground and in the world. The video is available for $12 and is being marketed
widely.
“Marketing
UN Radio in the USA.”
Westchester Chapter interns from LaGuardia Community College are helping UN staff
to market UN Radio in the U.S. UN Radio—available to US radio stations
since Autumn 2005—is a free international resource providing news and features about
the UN. The link is http://radio.un.org/ This
collaboration supports outreach to local, tri-state collegiate and other radio stations
and to UNA-USA chapters nationally. Since the award was made, the chapter has added
marketing UN TV, whose link is http://www.un.org/av/unfamily/
