PROGRAM DETAILS:
Did you know that Mount Vernon’s most recent Master Plan for zoning and development is over 40 years old?
In the opinion of many, this plan is seriously outdated. It does not reflect current economic, social, and community realities. Many in the planning and development communities go as far to say that the lack of a current plan is holding back new construction and development in Mount Vernon.
"Why can’t Mount Vernon," they say, "have the same robust development that New Rochelle, Yonkers, and White Plains are enjoying?"
In the last few years, The Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce has heard an increasing clamor for a new Master Plan. Architects, Urban Planners, Developers, Builders, City Administrators, Citizens, and Elected Officials all have cited the lack of an up-to-date plan as an obstacle to any broad and meaningful new development in Mount Vernon.
Today we have a new Administration that has publicly committed to establishing a new Master Plan. But adopting a new plan will take time, and cost money. In order to create momentum for this new initiative, the Chamber has invited a cross-section of knowledgeable professionals from the development community for a public forum in which all interested stakeholders can express their opinion on what the New Master Plan should encompass. We’ll discuss and debate such aspects as:
-
Drawbacks of the old Master Plan –how they point the way towards a New Plan
-
What's the proper balance among residential, commercial, retail development?
-
How do we leverage Mount Vernon's many advantages for good development?
-
Current appraisal of our neighborhoods
-
What we want Mount Vernon to look like in 5, 10, and 15 years
-
The long term: Mount Vernon in 2028 and after
