How to Use Apps to Market Your
Business
by Jeannie Mandelker, Sr. VP
at Harrison
Edwards PR & Marketing
Apple
introduced iPhone apps two years ago, and not since marketers embraced the
World Wide Web 15 years ago has marketing technology taken such a
significant step forward. With customers downloading 10 million apps a day
for iPhones, Androids, and Blackberries, as well as iPads and iPods,
consumer product giants have rushed to get their own apps out. Now
entrepreneurial businesses, professional firms, and other organizations
are asking themselves if they should follow suit.
The answer is
Yes! Apps are revolutionizing how organizations engage with customers.
Because apps are housed on a mobile device's home screen, your brand is
constantly before your customers' eyes, and they can connect to your
company with just the touch of a fingertip. If you provide meaningful
content, your customers will quickly use your apps to access information,
entertainment, and advice. No other marketing channel offers such a
personal, strong bond.
Now, for those of you who haven't been
paying attention these past two years, "app" is short for "application" -
a software program written for and meant to be used on mobile devices,
e.g., smart phones and iPods and iPads. Apps are just another tool -
albeit a powerful tool - in a marketing kit that includes public
relations, advertising, and social media. Apps are so powerful because
consumers are passionate users of their mobile devices. With WIFI Web
access, address books, GPS tracking, maps, and email, to name just a few
basic capabilities, smart phones and iPads are the go-to device for
information. You may be surprised to learn that many people search for
apps before they search on Google. If that's the case, you want to be sure
they find you there.
Content that works You can develop an app, but
people will use it only if the content is good - which is why apps are
best developed by marketing pros. The pro will identify what your target
client or customer wants, and then will offer them content and utilities
that engage them and make their lives more convenient. Here are two
examples of apps that work:
iFood Assistant by Kraft ($0.99) offers
recipes, cooking videos, shopping lists, and more. It's a handy tool when
one is at the grocery store or planning meals while one is on a train or
waiting in a doctor's office. Naturally, the recipes feature Kraft
products.
Sunshine
Coast Real Estate Map is an
interactive map of the
Sunshine
Coast in
British Columbia
that shows the locations of hundreds of homes for sale. Users can specify
criteria for their search, then learn about properties by touching a
marker on the map. It's a free app offered by an area Realtor, so it
offers plenty of ways to get in touch with him. Chances are your business
would benefit significantly by having an app. A restaurant can offer a
reservation app (which can email date, time, and location to invited
guests) and notify diners of daily specials. An accounting firm can offer
a branded expense-tracking app. At the very least, apps can link users to
a mobile version of your Web site. If you've ever tried to read a standard
Web page on your smart phone, you'll know why you need a mobile
version.
That said, your Web site can be viewed full size on an
iPad. Its big screen just screams for turbo-charged apps - media-rich apps
that spring to life before a viewer's eyes.
Consumers like apps
because they are convenient, quick and - let's face it - cool. Isn't that
a great message to convey to your customers?
Harrison Edwards, an
award-winning PR/Marketing firm based in Bedford Hills, with offices in
Manhattan and
Memphis,
TN, is designing apps for some of their
clients.
