More and more women have decided
that the best boss is the one who
stares at them in the mirror each
morning. According to the National
Foundation for Women Business Owners
(NFWBO), as of 2004, almost
two-thirds (63%) of all women-owned
businesses are privately-held
majority (51%) or more women-owned
for a total of 6.7 million firms,
employing 9.8 million people and
generating $1.2 trillion in sales.
And between 1997 and 2004, the
estimated growth rate in the number
of women-owned firms was nearly
twice that of all firms (17% vs.
9%).

E-CONNECTIONS Testimonial
Cynthia Rubino, Vice
President, Government and
Community Relations, Pace
University
When Cynthia Rubino was appointed
Vice President for Government and
Community Relations, Pace University
in 1999, one of the first steps she
took was to become a member of the
Westchester County Association.
Given her responsibilities for
advancing the university’s
legislative agenda and identifying
partnerships with external groups to
enhance the student experience, The
WCA has proven to be an invaluable
resource and catalyst for getting
important initiatives underway at a
time when higher education is being
challenged by an increasingly global
economy and changes in the
workforce.
Ms. Rubino lauds the collaborative
work of The WCA higher education
committee, which is chaired by Pace
President David A. Caputo and
includes the presidents of the
county’s other major higher learning
institutions as its members. She
says the committee has been
successful in working together to
“plan for and produce a better
trained workforce to attract
business to Westchester.”
At WCA events, Ms. Rubino has made
several valuable connections
including Pace alumni members who
are indispensable to the
university’s fund-raising efforts.
In addition, as a platinum sponsor
and as a sponsor of the Annual
Report from Congress Luncheon and
Government Reception, Pace
University attracts visibility in
two important ways: “It creates
greater awareness about the
contributions that Pace makes to the
business community and it
strengthens our ties with elected
officials and policy makers. Those
contacts help us in our ongoing
efforts to advocate for legislation
to benefit higher education.”
Ms. Rubino received her Masters in
Public Administration from Pace
University and a Bachelor of Science
degree from Mercy College in Dobbs
Ferry. She and her husband, John,
live in Yorktown. She enjoys
photography and travel.
