Self-funding is
a popular, alternative financial strategy many employers are now using in
place of traditional benefits insurance. Perhaps the greatest advantage
self-funding offers is better cash flow. Because a self-funded strategy
enables employers to pay for each claim as it's incurred, the employer
(not the insurer) has full use of working capital and interest earnings of
any monies in the fund throughout the year. Other self-funding advantages
include:
- Greater employer control. The
employer and its professional benefits administrator are able to develop
a benefits plan custom tailored to that employer's workforce.
- Reduction in risk, retention
and overhead. Because only a portion of total self funded plan costs are
composed of insurance premiums, these amounts are
reduced.
- Good experience. Because the
employer maintains control over health plan reserves, interest income is
maximized - income that would be otherwise generated by an insurance
carrier through investment of premium dollars.
- Easier review of progressive
claims. Professional benefits administrators regularly review a
company's claims information to determine if there are specific needs
areas to address.
- Not subject to state
regulations and mandates. The employer is not subject to conflicting
state health insurance regulations and mandates. Self-funded plans are
federally regulated under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act
(ERISA).

James
Oliverio, President Another9
Several years
ago, James Oliverio attended his first WCA Fall Leadership event and
introduced himself to a number of members. As a result of one brief
exchange with a top executive, Mr. Oliverio's company was engaged by one
of Westchester's leading companies to
undertake an assignment.
That was one of
the number of connections that Mr. Oliverio made following his decision to
join The Westchester County Association. Although a long- time resident of
Eastchester, he know very little about Westchester's business world. For nearly 14 years,
he commuted to Wall Street where he held major IT executive positions with
two leading investment banking firms. in 2002, he decided to go into
business for himself founding IdeaBox.
That career
move led to his meeting Westchester IT entrepreneurs, Christopher Furey,
Ben Gaines and Patrick Hermanto
of Savvy Networks. As a result of discovering a synergistic fit between
their businesses, Mr. Oliverio merged with Savvy Networks to create
Tarrytown-based Another9.
Mr. Oliverio
holds an M.S. in telecommunications and Computing Management from
Polytechnic University and a B.S. in Computer Science from
St. John's
University. He and
his wire, MIchele, are the parents of three children. He enjoys coaching
his children in sports and is an avid
golfer.
