Come October, businesses in Westchester
County will be required by law to secure
their wireless networks to protect their
customers against identity theft and other
computer fraud. The law, initiated by County
Executive Andy Spano, appears to be the
first of its kind. Commercial businesses
that use a wireless network to collect
personal customer information such as social
security numbers, credit card or bank
account information will be required to take
“minimum security measures.” In addition,
businesses that offer public Internet access
must post a sign advising customers to

commuters who live at least 30 miles away
from their worksite and can synchronize
their schedules with six or more commuters
nearby may be eligible for a vanpool. The
time spent riding to work can be used in a
variety of ways: completing work,
socializing or even catching up on sleep.
