Hon George Latimer

Westchester County Executive and Democratic Candidate for Congress

George Latimer grew up in Mount Vernon, attended Mount Vernon public schools and then earned his B.A. from Fordham University and a Master’s in Public Administration from New York University. Through his three decades of public service, George’s work has been defined by his deep commitment to local community needs, his ability to deliver real results for his constituents, and his willingness to stand up to right wing extremism from the NRA to MAGA Republicans.

As the first Democratic Chair of the County Legislature, Latimer cut property taxes three consecutive years while passing ground-breaking legislation including creating Westchester’s Human Rights Commission, passing Smoke Free Workplace Laws, Waste Haulers reforms, and establishing the first cable TV coverage of Board of Legislators meetings.

A former tenant organizer himself, Latimer was a leader on housing in the State Assembly, championed critical environmental issues, and he proudly voted to pass Marriage Equality, defend a woman’s right to choose, and keep dangerous guns off our streets. Latimer also cosponsored the New York Health Act to bring universal health care to all New York residents. After several years in the Assembly, Latimer won a tough battle to win a seat in the State Senate in November 2012, before defeating a MAGA Republican in 2017 to become the current County Executive.

During his tenure as County Executive, Latimer has upheld his impressive record of progressive achievements on key social justice reforms, including the Police Reform and Reimagining Task Force, the Gay Conversion Therapy ban, clinic access to help women safely access health care, funding for black maternal health care, the ban on gun shows on county property, the Anti-Wage Theft Law and the Wage History Anti-Discrimination Law. He has worked to electrify the County’s Bee-Line Bus Fleet, and modernize all County facilities for a green future.

Latimer is a leader on easing the financial burden on working families, including three consecutive County property tax cuts, investments in affordable housing and transit, and holding taxes down through a county credit rating stabilization. He brought many long-standing infrastructure projects to fruition, including the historic Elijah J. Miller House, Sprain Ridge Pool, New Rochelle Family Court and the North and South County Trailways. Latimer broke-ground on Memorial Field in Mount Vernon, and unveiled the County’s 9/11 First Responders Memorial on the 20th Anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

As a progressive Democrat, George Latimer has always been driven by his belief that government can be a force for good, but we need effective leaders who listen to all constituents and are committed to achieving progressive results. He is running for Congress to bring new energy and his real world experience to Washington, standing up to Republican extremism and demanding more of all our elected leaders in these challenging times.
